A head-fixed mouse recording demonstration shows population calcium responses in GABA-marked LDT cells and compares free-moving and head-fixed traces from the same mouse. Prominent movement interference is reduced, with limits on signal interpretation.

Next-generation GRABNE sensors improve norepinephrine responses and combine with red calcium signals to follow sleep, sensation and movement: broad transmitter fluctuations coexist with distinct cellular rhythms.

A dual-opsin strategy distinguishes CA3 and entorhinal inputs in male-mouse hippocampal slices, revealing potentiation after coactivation and enabling study of neuropeptide-related circuit plasticity.

A panel of genetically encoded sensors converts neuropeptide binding into fluorescence, revealing signals from local islet fluctuations to reward learning and stress, and clarifying when and where these messages appear.

A male-mouse study uses upconversion luminescence to read local temperature during feeding, anesthesia and external thermal changes, and separates signals at two depths along one probe.

In isolated mouse colon, activating Kit-labeled interstitial cells of Cajal brings forward low-frequency, high-amplitude contractions and increases their frequency without significantly increasing amplitude. ANO1-related blockade removes light-evoked contractions.

A STAR Protocols article brings locus-coeruleus-associated cells, cardiac molecular measures and ECG observation into one framework for studying brain–body changes accompanying seizures.

AAV11 offers new options for retrograde projection labeling and astrocyte transduction in mice, with pathway-dependent advantages and informative labeling differences in a disease model.

A male-mouse study integrates distributed microwires and optical fibers into a lightweight electrode covering 18 recording sites, with tests of field potentials, single units and multisite changes during basal-forebrain activation.

FOPECs combine fluorescent recognition by engineered cells with fiber-optic readout, without requiring prior sensor expression in the host animal. The study demonstrates brain noradrenaline, dopamine and ATP dynamics and drug-related responses in rabbit vasculature.

A male-mouse study labels piriform-related neuronal ensembles by experience. During focal seizures, calcium rises in the seizure-related ensemble but changes nonsignificantly in the interictal-related ensemble. Broad tagging windows also permit overlap.

In DBA/1 mouse models of seizure-induced respiratory arrest, this protocol combines retrograde tracing, optogenetics, and bilateral fiber photometry along the dorsal raphe–pre-Bötzinger pathway.
